Turn That Frown Upside Down- Learn How To Temporarily Replace A Crown

If a crown comes loose from one of your teeth, you can temporarily cover the damaged area until you are able to be seen by a dentist. After doing so, you won’t experience pain when eating or drinking hot or cold items, and you will be spared from embarrassment if the tooth that is missing a crown is near the front of your mouth.

Use The Following Materials

  • dental pick
  • mirror
  • salt
  • warm water
  • ice pack
  • rubber gloves
  • dental putty
  • applicator
  • gauze
  • scissors

Inspect Your Tooth And Alleviate Pain

Inspect the tooth that is missing the crown to make sure that no pieces of it are left inside your mouth. If you do find a couple fragments, remove them with a dental pick. The exposed nerves in your tooth can cause a dull, aching pain. To provide yourself with temporary relief, rinse your mouth out with warm water that has a couple teaspoons of salt added to it. Another way to relieve pain is by applying an ice pack to the area around the tooth. Once the tooth pain has subsided, you can complete the following steps with ease.

Apply Dental Putty

Put on a pair of rubber gloves to prevent germ exposure as you are handling the putty. Place a small amount of putty in your hand and roll it into a ball. Set the putty on top of the damaged tooth and use the applicator tool to mold it until it is shaped like one of your other teeth. The putty will take a few minutes to bond to your tooth. As you are waiting, avoid biting down or speaking.

Wait For The Putty To Harden

Once the putty has set, you will need to wait a couple hours for it to harden completely. Cut a piece of gauze and place it over the putty covered tooth. Keep your mouth closed as the putty dries. After the putty has dried, remove the gauze. You can eat or drink beverages and won’t have difficulty speaking. It is a good idea to avoid biting down with the damaged tooth, however, because it could cause the putty to come loose if too much pressure is applied. Use the other side of your mouth to chew and drink beverages through a straw.

It is safe to leave the putty on the tooth for a couple days. You will remain comfortable until you have a new crown installed. For more information, contact Wigwam Dental Care or a similar location.
